Department of Museums and Antiquities is a Government entity responsible for overseeing and taking care of Zanzibar’s heritage. Currently, the entity undertakes almost 86 gazetted historical and archaeological sites in both Unguja and Pemba Islands under the Ancient Monument Preservation Act No. 11 of 2002.
Among the core functions and objectives of the Department of Museums and Antiquities are conservation, protection, documentation, exhibition, education, research, and marketing as well as promotion of our esteemed heritage resources.
Our motto is “Antiquities are our heritage”. Department of Museums and Antiquities is committed to conserving and maintaining the wealth of our heritage for contemporary and future generations. Both local and international visitors and other stakeholders are welcomed to our heritage sites for knowledge gain, leisure, and investment.
We are proud to host the Zanzibar Tourism Investment and Travel Exhibition 2023 (ZTITE). This event is happening for the first time, and it is aligned with the reopening of the renovated Peace Memorial Museum and the Museum of Natural Science.
